Early this summer, 'theVIBE - Olathe' was an experiment that kinda took a life of it's own! The idea was simple: create a 'space' for people to come and hang out together around a common-life situation we can all dig, build relationships from our different places, and open the door to some discussions on Spirituality and the role Jesus plays in it. Nothing offensive, nothing demeaning, just a safe place for people to explore and worst-case come out with a good experience with a couple of drinks and some good music.
We had an awesome party at a club in Olathe (now Zulu's Taquiera Y Salon), had a reunion show of the Trump Dawgs who themselves had been on hiatus for two years, and packed the house with an awesome mix of people who all had a great time. Even the cops who stopped in on their regular rounds to create a 'presence' in local clubs loved what was going on and hung for a while, curious yet excited enough about the situation to break character for a moment. "We actually love Jesus, and we love a good beer, so it sounds good to us!" And all of this the top 6PM story on the local news. Quite a night to remember!
Then as quickly as it began, it also began to adapt. The night club needed to undergo some business structure changes, the culture of the immediate area wasn't a good fit for theVIBE, and several other pieces and vision opened up for what theVIBE is destined to be. All this to say, we believe that God definitely had plans for this event as a small experiment to open doors to larger things, but for the time being further events, parties, social gatherings, and reaches into the community are called to be on hiatus.
This is a VERY good thing. We believe there's a God who loves Olathe, loves all the people, and desires to bless it and extend His hand in relationship with the city as a whole. And we very much believe this God doesn't want to be holed up in church buildings, religious centers, and like places of worship and resolved to religiosity. Much like Jesus did while here, we believe He wants to exist in the bars, the coffee houses, the homes, the community centers, the recovery and addictions houses, and the places where He's needed the most. And like Jesus' followers logged in the Bible, we believe He's not wanting to come and condemn the people and stricken them religion, but to provide hope, answers, healing, and options in life that many of us don't realize we have.
This blog and the website will continue to exist, but for now will be a place of developing ideas and vision for a future Olathe full of blessings, restorations, and revivals that stem from all of the different places. If there is a God that's supposed to be supposed to be a loving, merciful, loving God who heals, resurrects, restores, saves, and answers prayer, then it's worth a shot to find Him to do His thing in this city, right? It definitely can't hurt to try it out... we really have nothing to lose, but everything to gain.
